Chris Posted 26 June , 2004 Share Posted 26 June , 2004 Hi all. Interested in a soldier who served with the above unit (aka The Prince of Wales Own). His name was William Wardle, sadly killed on 3rd Sept 1916. Hi s number was 5058. I wonder if anyone knows about the numbering for the above unit and could give me a rough idea of when William joined the Battalion. Cheers Chris
CROONAERT Posted 26 June , 2004 Share Posted 26 June , 2004 I don't know if this helps at all, but, according to SDGW, every soldier who was killed with the 1/8 W.Yorks (Leeds Rifles) - a Territorial unit- who had a 4 digit service number beginning with 50.. was killed in September 1916. This could possibly indicate them having been enlisted late 1914, early 1915. As a guess, I'd say he enlisted between November 1914 and March 1915. Dave.
