Picture of Stanley

Thank you very much for all that - especially the lovely picture.

He ought to have been 154 MG Coy, but I don't think he was - his number doesn't fit - most of the 4 Bn Seaforths in 154 Coy had new MGC numbers in the 20000 range. Between Apr-May 1916, fifteen more from 1/4 Bn transferred and all had numbers close to Stanley Haines (37300 range) - sadly they went to many different units on arrival in France so in the dark at the moment. Currently sifting through Company war diaries and if anything comes to light I will contact you.

Bob

thanks for this - just goes to show you cant be too careful in reckoning two sets of records belong to the same man. Were they related - I assume so since they had the same address.

I have several other Purton men in my database and would be happy to swap details:

GRIFFEN - William Charles 15963 R Berks - TR8/16024 Training Reserve

KENNET - Stanley Edward - 15964 R Berks - 596466 Labour Corps

SMITH - Leslie James - 14263 R Berks

WOODFORD - Edward John - 21856 Somerset LI - 23660 R Berks

WOODFORD - Christopher G - 15869 R Berks - later Labour Corps.

I have been updating the story of Acting Corporal Frederick Stanley Haines, known as Stan, who died in 1916, in advance of the anniversary of his death. I would be grateful for any information which anyone can add to his story. I am particularly interested to know whether anyone can confirm whether Gladys Lilian Hedges was Stan's girlfriend. She was a cousin of the Hedges family mentioned above.
