Thomas, then aged 11, lived in the married quarters of the Border Regiment in St Mary’s, Carlisle. With him are his mother Kate, aged 35, sisters Lilian (9), Amy (7), Norah (6 months) and brother Frederick (4). The children are all recorded as being born in Carlisle. Father Thomas is not recorded at the address. Serving abroad, perhaps?
