Jon Miller Posted 1 July , 2004 Share Posted 1 July , 2004 Does anyone have the history or other information for the 1st/28th London Artist's Rifles, particularly for 20 May 1918? The war diary reveals little, so any other info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jon.
Simon_Fielding Posted 1 July , 2004 Share Posted 1 July , 2004 "During April and may we performed tours of duty in the new line established after the retreat north of Mesnil and in Aveluy wood sector. We lost Capt. neighbour (who had rejoined us in March) through sickness and Col. Johnson was wounded in Aveluy Wood. Thereupon Capt. Wilkinson assumed command." p.xxviii The Regimental Roll of Honour and War Record of the Artists' Rifles 3rd edition Howett and Son London 1922. Jon Miller Posted 1 July , 2004 Author Share Posted 1 July , 2004 Thank you Simon. A very quick reply, covering just the right period. Though it's not the most detailed bit of history anyone has written!
Simon_Fielding Posted 2 July , 2004 Share Posted 2 July , 2004 True! Anyone in particular you're looking for as the book might have a bit of additional detail? Cheers Simon
Jon Miller Posted 2 July , 2004 Author Share Posted 2 July , 2004 The soldier I was interested in was a Pte Percy Stanbury, but I wasn't expecting him to be mentioned, particularly as the combined efforts of the war diary and history don't seem to be able to give us much idea where the battalion was, leave alone a single soldier! Thanks anyway, Simon. Jon.
