15th Siege Battery -URGENT enquiry

I leave Johannesburg Monday lunchtime - arriving Heathrow Tues I go to the PRO. I think I have ordered wrong material.

Clive Halse was with the 15th Siege Battery when he died of wounds 5th October 1917.

I have ordered from the PRO the history of the 15th Heavy Battery, RGA (WO 95/4484) because someone suggeted that the 15th Siege might have become the 15th Heavy.

BUT - I see going through my notes that Dick Flory told me that the 15th Siege Battery was attached to the 21st Heavy Artillery Group as at 5th October 1917.

HELP URGENTLY - Can someone tell me what number to order from PRO for me to look at Tuesday or Wednesday (which are the only two days in my whole life I will ever be near the PRO). I cant look up PROCAT - too hard and too panicked. And is there a war diary for teh 15th Siege BAttery and did it change.

Can someone advise. I will be reading my emails till about 3pm GMT before I set off for airport - will just leave time to place order with PRO>

Thank you kind samaritan

Kathie

Only war diary at PRO for 15 Siege Battery WO95/323, covers up to March 1915.

A great place to start is WO 95/5494. "List of Royal Artillery, Army Service Corps, Machine Gun Corps and Medical Units with the Division, Corps or Army they fought with. Siege Batteries Canadian Siege Batteries Heavy Batteries Army Brigades RH & RFA Army Service Corps Units ASC Companies HT & MT Mechanised Transport Companies Index to RASC companies Machine Gun Units, Tank Corps, Mountain Batteries Armoured motor cars and Heavy Artillery Entrenching Battalions Medical units in France Hospitals, Casualty Clearing stations, Ambulances Medical stores, Specialists, Mobile Laboratories and X-ray units". Will tell you what happened to 15 Siege Battery RGA.

The 15th Siege Battery was never redesignated as the 15th Heavy Battery. It remained as the 15th Heavy Battery through out the war. As Chris indicates the 15 Siege Battery war diary is only available through March 1915. The 15th Siege Battery was part of the 21st Heavy Artillery Group from 14 Aug 17 to 6 Oct 17. You might try looking at the 21st HAG war diary for that period at WO95/469. Regards. Dick Flory

Chris and Dick - panic is a terrible thing especially when an ATM eats your credit card and the bank says it will take five working days to replace it and its too bad you are going abroad. So thank you both - I am ordering now from the PRO. Dick especially thank you for these several messages out of the ether directed to you just because you once offered some info.
