Ivor Lee Posted 3 July , 2004 Share Posted 3 July , 2004 Samuel Hood was from South Shields and had previously served in the 12th Labour Battalion of the West Riding regiment. At the time of his death he was 25 years old. His Battalion had been raised at Marston Hall, Middlesborough on 10 March 1916 and arrived in France on 2 April. On 3 July 1917 they were working on the YPRES-VALMERTINGE road and came under enemy shelling. Samuel Hood was killed, however, when their camp was shelled on the same day. The shelling resulted in the death of 3 other men in the Company with a further 8 wounded.

Will O'Brien Posted 3 July , 2004 Share Posted 3 July , 2004 In 1901 the 10 year old Samuel Hood lived at 7 Peel Street, South Shields with his widowed mother Margaret who was aged 45, his two elder brothers Robert (aged 20 & a Coal Miner Hewer) & William (aged 13, a Grocers Assistant), his two elder sisters Margaret aged 19 & Annie aged 15. Both sisters Domestic Servants. There was also a Border living a the property by the name of Mary Smith a 48 year old Widow & listed as having no occupation..............Note the brother Mr E. Hood as quoted as NOK on the CWGC is not listed as a member of the household. Perhaps he was the eldest & had already left home by 1901
