GavinH Posted 11 July , 2004 Share Posted 11 July , 2004 I have a copy of a MIC for a man who served with the ASC. Next to his unit is written '9th F BRY'. I have interpreted this as 9th Field Bakery. Can anyone confirm whether this is correct. Also, does anyone know which Divsion this unit served with, or when it went to France? Thanks Gavin
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 13 July , 2004 Share Posted 13 July , 2004 Gavin, Is his service number prefixed S3 or S4? If so, I would say your assumption is correct. Ian
crispy Posted 13 July , 2004 Share Posted 13 July , 2004 Gavin. I do not want to add wrong information, but might not your ASC unit be a Field Butchery? Perhaps later in the day a ASC/RASC specialist might spot your post and tell you the correct meaning on the card. It would seem that plans were put in place as early as November 1912 when the Expeditionary Force Tables for ASC Coys were formulated that both Field Bakery & Field Butchery Units were included, reading about them at some point in the past I remember that the abbreviations used caused me (and others) on the course some confusion. GavinH Posted 13 July , 2004 Author Share Posted 13 July , 2004 Ian, Thanks for your reply. My man's number has a S1 prefix. Any idea what this might mean? David Thanks very much for the suggestion. It seems very possible. He qualified for a 1914 Star, and the MIC shows an arrival date of 05/10/1914. So hopefully I should be able to sort out which unit he was with. I just haven't worked out where to look yet! Regards Gavin
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 13 July , 2004 Share Posted 13 July , 2004 Could be either - the 14 Star medal roll will have the exact Unit on the top of the page. Ian
GavinH Posted 4 September , 2004 Author Share Posted 4 September , 2004 Just as an update, I have now seen the original 1914 Medal roll, and the unit listed at the top of the page is the 9th Field Bakery. Regards Gavin
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 4 September , 2004 Share Posted 4 September , 2004 Excellent - nice to get to the bottom of this. Thanks for posting the outcome. Ian
GavinH Posted 5 September , 2004 Author Share Posted 5 September , 2004 Ian, Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. My previous ASC medal roll look ups (non 1914 Star) have been uniformly unhelpful! Incidently, the man I'm researching had an eventful war and went on to win the MM with the 1st K.R.R.C. Does anyone know which Division the 9th Field Bakery was with in 1914? Regards Gavin
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 6 September , 2004 Share Posted 6 September , 2004 You might be able to work this back by using the original date of disembartion mentioned on the MIC. Ian
GavinH Posted 6 September , 2004 Author Share Posted 6 September , 2004 The 7th Division is looking promising...... Thanks Gavin
