charles martin sell was my great grandfather......aside from visiting the public

records office are there any other means of finding out what corps.regiment or

battalion he fought with....were soldiers identification numbers issued in batches...or did age or geographical location define corps or regiment that a soldier fought with...

As you already know his number rank and name, if his service papers have survived you should be able to have a good base on which to find out a lot more about him, as such a visit to Kew would seem your best bet.
