Dolphin Posted 13 July , 2004 Share Posted 13 July , 2004 Second Lieutenant Frank Lambton Oliver, aged 19 and formerly with the Somerset Light Infantry, was flying as the observer in DH4 A7421 of No 55 Sqn RFC, flown by Lt A P Matheson, aged 21 and formerly with the Army Service Corps, on a bombing mission when they were engaged in combat with six enemy aircraft west of Audenarde/Oodenaarde on 13 July 1917. They were last seen going down is a steep spiral and were posted as missing, but both airmen were killed in action. A victory was credited to Leutnant Ernst Hess of Jasta 28; it was the third of Ltn Hess's eventual 17 victories before he too was killed in action while flying Albatros D.Va 5347/17 in combat with Adjutant De Kergolay of Escadrille N.96 on 23 December 1917. 2Lt Oliver had been wounded in action on 23 April 1917 and was shot down but not injured on 10 May when flying in DH4 A2150 with Lt C A Stevens on a photographic reconnaisance mission.
