CEF Soldier in G.M.Police?

Searching through a file on a soldier from the 58th Battalion, I found that after six months in France (Jan-Aug 1916) he was returned to England to the CCAC (Canadian Casualty Assembly Centre) because of ill health, joined the 36th Reserve Bn., later served with No.2 Special Service Company, and finally the G.M.Police.all in the UK. He was eventually invalided out.

Anyone know what exactly the G.M.Police were?

That might be it - he eventually was discharged due to a variety of ailments.

Hi Terry:

They were the Garrison Military Police. There were 13 detachments of GMP (Nos. 1 through 13). Each military district in Canada raised one detachment and they took their number from the district where they were raised. Eleven detachments remained in Canada and Nos. 8 and 9 served with the CEF overseas.

Perhaps he left the service after being invalided out and joined the Greater Manchester Police - if they even existed then - I am from Canada, what would I know? I always love a puzzle and that is where I ended up.
