Can anyone give me a bit of detail as to what the above were doing on 1st July 1916?

Tony,

From Ray Westlakes book,

July 1st 1916 attacked Ovillers with the 8th KOYLI. The leading waves cleared the German first line and entered the second. Here due to heavy losses assault was checked and withdrawal forced.

Casualties=635.
