D. P. Geaney, late N. Z. Rif. Brig.” [from the 9206 supp to the LG] Nunhead (All Saints) Cemetery contains 578 First World War burials. The majority are in three war graves plots; the United Kingdom plot (in Square 89) has 260 graves, the Australian plot (near the main entrance) has 16 and the Canadian plot (in Square 52, also containing New Zealand and South African burials) has 35. The graves in the Australian and Canadian plots are marked with individual headstones. The graves in the United Kingdom plot and the remaining war graves scattered throughout the cemetery could not be marked individually; the casualties buried in these graves are therefore commemorated by name on a screen wall inside the main entrance gate to the cemetery. A second screen wall commemorates the 110 Second World War casualties buried in a further war graves plot in Square 5 and elsewhere in the cemetery whose graves could not be marked by headstones. Robert Dunlop Posted 27 July , 2004 Share Posted 27 July , 2004 At this time, the New Zealand Division were responsible for holding the line north of Armentieres, beside the River Lys. The divisional history records a German raid on the 19/20th and on the 28th. However, throughout this time the New Zealanders were subjected to frequent (and on the 19/20th very heavy) artillery bombardments. Robert
