Manchester Regiment - two new books

Just published on behalf of the Regimental Collection and, currently, only available from the Regimental Museum (they have online ordering):

First up is a history of the 22nd Battalion by Alastair Cowan. Title, unsurprisingly, "The 22nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment". Shortish book, some 84 pages, including the platoon photos taken from the City Battalions Book of Honour

"Valhalla" is Walter Ibbotson Hulme's account of his service with "D" Company of the 2/6th Battalion, from its inception until he was wounded in October 1917. Hulme originally published it privately in 1918. Wish I'd known of its existance when I was writing my history of the 6th Battalion.

These have only just arrived so it'll be a while until I can get to read them and write a review.

Let us know what you think of them, John.

When I read your thread title, I thought you'd been very busy over the holiday period, dashing off another couple of publications.

John - Is there a book on 2/5th? a contact of mine's uncle 200914 Cpl Henry Topping served with them. Apparently the Manchester regt Museum showed little interest in having Topping's medals etc. I did advise him to keep all of the stuff in the family.

Nothing on either of the 5th battalions, I'm afraid. I'm surprised at the Museum apparent reluctance on the medals. I've always thought they were quite keen - unlike many regimental museum, the Manchesters display their full collection of medals and, IIRC, are starting to do some basic research on the soldiers.

Not really, just that an uncle was severely wounded on 3 10 17 and I wanted to learn about him. He was in 11th but obituary said that he was in machine gun corps so I also wondered how this worked

Probably started off in the 11th and was later transferred to the MGC.

Couple of likely reasons for the transfer. First, assuming he was an early recruit for the 11th, was that he was a machine gunner with them and was transferred when the MGC was formed in late 1915. Second, is that he was transferred at a later date (and after specialist training) if he had been away from the 11th for a considerable period due to recovering from wounds or illness.
