Malcolm Posted 29 July , 2004 Share Posted 29 July , 2004 (edited) 3rd to 4th May 1915 the British withdrew from the small salient near Sanctuary Wood, the 1st RS were then withdrawn to Vlamertinnge. The Germans attacked the area of woods south of the Menen Road after a horrendous artillery bombardment on 8th May. The 1st RS were sent up the line in support of 81st Brigade. The 81st were in a small salient and the northern side was ' sagging '. When they arrived they found the unit to their left had been forced from their trenches and the Germans were in the process of occupying them when the 1st RS appeared, fixed bayonets and charged, evicting them in disarray, the 1st RS and their territorial companions in the 9th RS held these trenches, without losing a sap, until relieved on the night of 22nd/23rd May. 1st RS had 5 Officers killed, 4 wounded and 332 OR casualties 9th RS had 2 Officers and 93 ORs among whom was Pvt James Pearson, one of the most skilful and lion-hearted threequarters who ever played for Scotland.
