Hi,

I'm currently doing some research on a man of the RGA, but have come across a couple of units that i have not heard of before. They are:

No:- 5 Fire Comd, RGA. (found on his discharge certificate.)

and

Base Dtls. R.G.A. (found on his medal roll).

Has anybody heard of Fire Comd or Base Dtls to the RGA before and if so what would their purpose be?

Cheers,

Ski

Fire Commands were I believe 'Area Commands' covering RGA Home Service (Coastal) Batteries. No.1 Fire Command covered Cornwall. I do not know the location of No.5 or any of the others.

Thanks Dave,

That would make sense, in that he returned to the UK and was then discharged from one of the Fire Comd's areas.

Anyone got an idea of what Base Dtls RGA is?

Thanks,

Ski

Base details would typically include clerks who dealt with admin and looked after effects left at the base and possibly battle casualty replacements

Not sure why it would have appeared on the medal roll unless the base in question was in theatre

No. 5 Fire Command, RGA was at Portland. They were headquarters for Coast Batteries.

Thanks for the reply's everyone!

Just for interest the man i am researching is:-

31127 Sjt. Walter James Halls, R.G.A.

Enlisted at London 26/04/1909

Enetered France as part of Base Dtls RGA 15/05/1915

Awarded the M.S.M for service's in Italy with 240 Siege Bty 03/06/1915

Discharged 06/06/1921

Thanks again,

Ski

P.s.

That would make sence about Base details, including clerks, etc, as i have a certificate of eduction from the army for basic writing and mathematics. Also note that at the time of this course(04/08/1910) Sjt Halls was part of 66 Coy RGA.
