Victory 1918

Have just finished reading this book and found it to be a well written, very readable book encompassing almost the whole breadth of the war and its' conclusion. While many of the books I have read spend little or no time on the so called "sideshows", Palmer goes into some detail about the battles in the Middle East and the Balkans. His section on the Middle East points out the roots of many of the current problems in that area.

He focusses to some extent on the political and diplomatic causes of many of the things that happened, while not neglecting the trials and tribulations of the foot soldiers in the various theatres. He seems to be able to move fluently from one scene to another without causing the reader to lose the thread of the story, and relates the terms of the armistice and its' protagonists in a form readily understandable by the layman.

Some of his statistics are interesting, and assuming they are correct, I wonder how many people realised that there were twice as many people of German extraction living in the U.S. at that time as British? (If you don't include the Irish that is)

Well worth reading in my opinion.
