hazelclark Posted 16 November , 2012 Share Posted 16 November , 2012 Any comments on Martin Gilbert's book? It was the very first book I read and for a novice it is perfect. I loved it and it got me interested in reading more about the war. However, I have subsequently learned that it may not be entirely accurate based on data released since. Nevertheless, it is a book that I would always want to own. It is very readable, with lots of quotations from the war poets and much anecdotal information about people who would later become prominent in WW2 and in politics as well as their family members who were lost or wounded. For me, I think it served a different purpose than some of the excellent books I have read since. I didn't like his book on the Somme though. it looked like it was thrown together in a hurry with bits taken verbatim from some of his other work. Somewhat synoptic? Hazel C.
