Hi,

can anyone give me any information on my a William Hoe PACEY.(my grandfather).

Unfortunately the only thing I know about his war service is that he was in the war.

I know it's a bit of a long shot as there's no idea as to what service he served in etc but I can't find out anything about him at all. It's worth a try at least!

The other person named is my other grandfather and this is a little easier.

He joined up in October 1915 and joined the 9th Lincolns.I also know he seriously injured on July 3rd 1915 at a place called FRICOURT .He was finally discharged ommedical grounds in Jan 1917.Can anyone tell me about that action at Fricourt on that day or anything about grandfather(no matter how insignificant)?

Many thanks to anyone who can help.

Susan:

Welcome to The Forum!

Do you have your grandfathers ages(birth), and maybe where they were from?

Dear Gordon,

thanks for your reply to my posting.

Yes I can give you dates and where they were born. Here they are.

William Hoe PACEY.

Born circa 1880 in Elston,Nottinghamshire. However by 1914 he may have been living in either Newark,Notts or Holbeach,Lincolnshire. (It's possibly the last of those places as my father was born in Holbeach in June 1915.) Married.

Age in 1914- 33/34 yrs

George Henry RAGSDELL(sometimes spelt RAGSDALE).

Born 2nd February 1896 in Pinchbeck West, near Spalding,Lincolnshire.By 1914 he may have been living in the Sutton Bridge,Long Sutton,Lutton area of the county.(Those places are in the very south of the county).Unmarried

Age in 1914- 18 yrs

Hope that's of some help.

Many thanks for your help,

Best wishes,

Susan Green.

Hi Susan

Did they both survive the war? Ironically, its 'easier' to get basic info on someone who fell than of they survived (generally speaking).

Stand to be corrected by more learned Pals, but at 33 years old in 1914, he may have been 'too old' for an active service unit. The maximum age rose as the was went on, but think it was 30 in 1914.

As for George Ragsdell, he is going to have earned medals, which records are at the PRO. the 'MIC' is a good start, and may be on line now (theyre still putting t on line). See the link for his Regiments history http://www.1914-1918.net/lincolns.htm and have a look in the Battalions War Diaries (if they survive). Their Service records may also be at the PRO, but only 30% ish survive as I understand it.

Post what you have on this forum of you get stuck at any stage, and someone will prob be able to help!!

Good luck

Steve

Hi Susan

Interesting post. I would think the online MIC should be your best bet to get a Regt number for the men, and both should be online soon if not already. Some info on the 9th Bn Lincs Regt for you. This was a New Army Bn formed at Lincoln in November 1914, but was transferred to reserve status when the 10th Lincs (Grimsby Chums) was formed. The 9th remained in the UK, mainly at Cannock Chase, supplying reinforcements for the other Lincs Bn's mainly the 6th, 7th and 8th. So at some point George Ragsdell would have moved from the 9th to a 'frontline' Lincs Battalion. My guess is he was with the 7th Lincs at Fricourt on July 3rd 1916, as they suffered haeavy casullties whilst attacking Crucifix Trench in the morning before parties of them moved on to help in the capture of Railway Copse in the afternoon.

Hope of interest

Chris
