healdav Posted 17 March , 2012 Share Posted 17 March , 2012 I have just come across a review of a new book on POW. I have not read it, so have no idea what it might be like. The book is: Barbed Wire Disease, by John Yarnall. The History Press Ltd. ISBN 978-0752456904 Price: £12.99 The review says that it looks at conditions facing POW during World War One, including the disease of the book's title, caused by lengthy confinement in barbed wire enclosures. Using unpublished official files and Cabinet papers, he assesses the controversy surrounding their treatment.
bootneck Posted 21 March , 2013 Share Posted 21 March , 2013 It's now £3.95 from the Navy & Military Press. I've just brought a copy and just started to read it. For some reason, which I cannot put my finger on, I have reservations about it. Bootneck
Marilyne Posted 21 March , 2013 Share Posted 21 March , 2013 Does it include the work of the ICRC and the application of the rules of international law governing the status of POW at that time (Brussels Declaration 1874, Hague Conventions) ???? stuartd Posted 21 March , 2013 Share Posted 21 March , 2013 The documentary Prisoners of the Kaiser well worth watching in support of any reading on WW1 POWs. There's a book of the same name.
bootneck Posted 21 March , 2013 Share Posted 21 March , 2013 It mentions them. I am going to read the book before making any comment on it. I must admit that I brought the book because it was cheap as it did not grab me as a 'must buy' when it was first published. bootneck Posted 28 March , 2013 Share Posted 28 March , 2013 I have just finished this book and I heartily agree with Doug's review. At £3.95 this book is a bargain. The title had originally put me off. Bootneck
