Simon_Fielding Posted 6 August , 2004 Share Posted 6 August , 2004 Hear hear. In particular, Private John ALBERTS Private Herbert BEDWELL Private Walter BOOTON all of the 4th Worcestershire, all from Bewdley, Worcestershire, all killed in action 89 years ago today. Pte. Alberts was a Boer War veteran: from The Kidderminster Shuttle: 25th SEP 1915. PAGE 8 "Bewdley Man Missing. Private J. Alberts. It only seems the other day that Jack Alberts, of High-street, Bewdley, was following his usual employment as a gardener. It is longer than it seems. In a short time he had joined the Army, passed through a period of training, been drafted to the Dardanelles, and is now officially reported missing. He was well known in Bewdley and surrounding district, and went through the South African campaign fifteen years ago under Major Whitcomb. Private J. Alberts, who is a married man living in High-street, joined Kitchener’s Army recently and was drafted with the 4th Worcesters in July. His wife has received the following letter, written on August 5th:- We are still close to the sea, but it keeps very hot. However, we can have plenty of bathing, which keeps us fairly clean. We have got no blankets, only a waterproof sheet and our topcoat, which is quite enough out here. We have not gone up into the trenches, but expect to go any day now. The big guns keep firing all day and night. Our flying machines go up pretty often, and the Turks fire at them continuously, but so far they have not hit one. Tom Davies (a Bewdley man) is still with us, but in another platoon. One of the men who was with me in the South African campaign, a man from Worcester, is in the same company as I am now. He has been in the Regular Army ever since the Boer War. Mrs. Alberts has had the official news from the War Office that Private Alberts had been reported missing." Stand easy lads.
