chris.wight Posted 6 August , 2004 Share Posted 6 August , 2004 This is the first picture postcard I've purchased, partly on the chance he may have been with the 244th Battalion. From what you can see, do you think his cap and collars are the star shape of the 244th Kitchener's Own or is it a maple leaf badge. There doesn't appear to be anything distinctive to his uniform, at least to my eye. Am I missing some helpful detail here?

Guest stevenbec Posted 6 August , 2004 Share Posted 6 August , 2004 Mate, Being an aussie I am not up with your badges but to my eye it appears to be a maple leaf with either a crown or some thing in the middle. Cheers S.B
N.S.Regt. Posted 7 August , 2004 Share Posted 7 August , 2004 Looks like a general list badge and collars to me too Chris Best regards N.S.Regt.
chris.wight Posted 7 August , 2004 Author Share Posted 7 August , 2004 Yes, after enlarging the head, I have to agree with the both of you. I'll just have to keep hunting for an elusive photo of the 244th!
Broznitsky Posted 7 August , 2004 Share Posted 7 August , 2004 Chris, he's got a 7-button tunic on; when did the 244th start recruiting? 7-button was early in the war . . . To my eye, the unzoomed photo does not look like a GS cap and collars; but not quite like the colour photo you post. (I confess to seeing 41st fleur-de-lis designs where I shouldn't )
chris.wight Posted 7 August , 2004 Author Share Posted 7 August , 2004 Peter, I believe they started recruiting in mid 1916.
HIGHSPEN Posted 7 August , 2004 Share Posted 7 August , 2004 Apart from any "technical"aspects----looks as if he has made good use of the old iron. In my National Service days----brown paper was a useful additional help to get good creases!!!!
Broznitsky Posted 7 August , 2004 Share Posted 7 August , 2004 Peter, I believe they started recruiting in mid 1916. So, units in Canada could still have been issued with the 7-button in 1916, although it was fading out. Doesn't help us here . . .
