Guest narside Posted 8 August , 2004 Share Posted 8 August , 2004 I am researching for a friend a Temporary Captain J Butler who was a Riding Master at a Remount Services Depot (possibly Templecombe) from Oct.1915 to March 1916. Does anyone know what the duties of a Riding Master were and was this rank appropriate? Michael Townsend
tintin1689 Posted 9 August , 2004 Share Posted 9 August , 2004 The Riding Master of a Cavalry Regiment or Artillery Brigade was responsible for the Rough Rider Sgts and Corporals (denoted by a spur trade insignia on the sleeve) The Rough Riders break in horses. The Riding Master superintends this and riding instruction within the unit. A Riding Master would be commissioned from the ranks on the same type of commission as the Quartermaster. He would be a man of long service with great experience of horses and riding.Captain or Major are I believe the usual ranks, though out of respect he is customarily referred to by his appointment. The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment at Hyde Park Barracks still have a Riding Master.
