curranl Posted 9 August , 2004 Share Posted 9 August , 2004 Remembering today the men of 6th Royal Irish Rifles who fell on the 9th/10th August, 1915 on the slopes of Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli - a long way from their homes in the green fields of Ireland. This was my grand uncle's (Mick Curran) Battalion. He would survive Gallipoli and go on to serve in Salonika and Palestine, returning home in 1919 without a scratch. The vast majority of the men he joined up and trained with would not be so lucky. Also remembering the others who fell on Gallipoli on this day; Irish and British of 10th (Irish) Division, those in the British Regiments, the Anzacs and the Opposition, the Turks. Ar dheis De go raibh gach anam. (May all their souls be at the right hand of God.) So here, while the mad guns curse overhead, And tired men sigh, with mud for couch and floor, Know that we fools, now with the foolish dead, Died not for flag, nor King, nor Emperor, But for a dream, born in a herdsman's shed, And for the secret Scripture of the poor. Tom Kettle, 9th Royal Dublin Fusiliers, KIA 9/9/1916, Ginchy.

Morval Ross Posted 9 August , 2004 Share Posted 9 August , 2004 A Fine Tribute to all our fallen forefathers, resting in foreign feilds. Always remembered for their sacrifice, forever young in our eyes and hearts. Thanks for that Liam, Ross.
carninyj Posted 9 August , 2004 Share Posted 9 August , 2004 I was reading a snippet of a local rag about some of Des's Ballymena wounded from the 6RIR and that very action today. Ballymena's wounded, or a least those initially known, included: Pte Alexander Watson & his brother Samuel Pte Archie Beattie Pte Wm Finlay Pte Henry MacDonnell (He said the shell that wounded him killed his captain) Pte John Turtle Regards Carninyj
