Hi,

I've just started adding Officers to my database.

Seems a silly question but how do you define Killed?

Regards,

Steve.

Killed in a way not resulting from enemy action (hit by a train, falling out of a window, murdered, training accident, etc, etc, etc.).

Thanks Dave,

So this is the same as Died in SDGW then?

Cheers,

Steve.

Not necessarily. "Died" encompasses a whole lot more (disease, heart failure, old age(!), etc. etc.) "Killed" usually indicates some form of violence involved in the death.

Just to clear up. In the hard copy of ODGW these definitions are given :

K in A... ... Killed in Action

D.ofW.... ... Died of Wounds

Killed... ... Killed, other than in action.

Died... ... From natural causes, etc.

Dave.

Dave,

Thanks for bothering to reply to what must seem a silly question!

My understanding of the definitions are just about the same as yours.

The reason that i asked is that out of 940 'o.r.' deaths in my battalion i have none 'killed'. Plenty that 'died' however. I know of at least one instance where a builing collapsed on a man and there must have been several training accidents, just wondered why the difference

Thanks again,

Steve

Steve,

Just out of interest.

During my research into Yorkshire Regiment officers I have so far come across two "Killed".

Both turn out on investigation to have been murdered.

I hope this isn't thread hijacking but, Bob, I'd be very interested to know which of 'your' officers was involved and any details you have where murder is concerned.

If it is not suitable, for whatever reason, to be posted, please be so kind as to contact me privately.

Bob,

That certainly is interesting. I have three officers 'killed' recorded on ODGW from my battalion, one was an MC winner and one was 'killed' in March 1919. Unfortunately I have not yet begun researching them.

By the way, you're not related to any Lincolnshire Regt. Coulsons are you?

Racing, yes it is thread hijacking :D:D

Cheers All,

Steve.
