Hi

Yet another question on the T.F

(1) 1295 on 1915 Trio & 200109 on MM, did he join very early in the war as his service number is 1295?

(2) Renumbering system - Re - 200109 why did this happen?

(3) Do any of you guys know anything on the 1/5 East Lans? around March 25 1918 the date of his MM?

Scott

Hello Scott

1295 was his TF / pre war number and the 6 digit one was allocated by March 1917. It brought the TF numbering in lline with the rest of the army basically.

Sorry mate, not an E Lancs buff myself, but look here http://www.1914-1918.net/42div.htm. 126th Brigade 42 Division for battalion overview.

Can help with what they were doing Jan to Dec 1915, but not 1918 Im afraid. Likely to be some specialists in the E Lancs here though!

Did he make it through the war? HAve you got his MIC, papers etc yet? If not, can point you in their direction ...

The 1/5th 2nd Liet AV Smith earned a VC in Dec 1915 I notice.

ANyway, let me know if can help, otherwise, good luck to you!

Steve

Soz mate, was rushing & forgot the most important bits!

What was his name etc and ave u got a picture? (amazing what can be found sometimes from a pic). Worth posting anything you have here scott and see what meat can be added.

The 1295 number and the regiment he was in suggests he was pre war TF. (The 1/5th were a TF unit.) In which case, likely to have signed up early Aug 1914, like the other TF's. Small chance thats not the case, but more than likely!

Scott.

The next 6 posts are what the regimental history has to say for the 1/5th Bn between March 23rd and March 26th 1918...

With a number as low as 1295 I would suggest that he had probably enlisted into the TF circa 1912~3,when the Battalion strength would have been around 500~800 Men,The TF was created in 1908 with numbers starting @ "1",& allowing for natural wastage up to the 1910s one usually finds that men in TF Battalions with numbers below 2250/2500 are pre August 1914 Enlisters :)

A couple of things.

There's an extensive and brilliant article about the 1917 renumbering of the TF in the "TF Study Group" area on the Long, Long Trail. Well worth a read.

Is the date you have for the MM award the date when it appeared in the London Gazette? If so, the actual event would have preceded it by about 3-4 months or so.
