Don't know of a book but suspect that the problem is that the function of the WW2 Home Guard was shared between a whole raft of different organizations in WW1.

The Volunteer Force was the WW1 equivalent of the Home Guard. I cannot think of a general book devoted to it, but K W Mitchinson's Defending Albion: Britain's Home Army, 1908-1919 Palgrave Macmillan, 2006 contains quite a lot about it.
