Hello all! Just read this book called “The smell of the Twentieth Century. Wars, migrations, lieux de mémoire” by Luciano Trincia. It’s an intimate look at the events as they unfold through the Twentieth Century and at the lives of persons who experienced the horrors of the war on the home front and battlefields. It reads more like a novel than a history, but it is not fiction. I found it extraordinary and reviewed it as a reader on worldcat.org. The book is in Italian though ("L'odore del Novecento"), but is lavishly illustrated with portraits of the participants and scenes shot on battlefields and ruined cities and towns. It's worth a try.
