Guest jantyannie Posted 16 August , 2004 Share Posted 16 August , 2004 My mum gave me these two photographs that she assumed were of her father, Matthew Shields, in the Home Guard in Scotland during WWII. However as the man in the first photo is wearing jodhpurs and spurs and carrying a riding crop I am wondering if it may be her Grandfather, Patrick Shields who was with the 51st Highland Division as part of the Royal Garrison Artillery during WWI. Does anyone recognise the uniform that could help me. Thanks
CROONAERT Posted 16 August , 2004 Share Posted 16 August , 2004 Not Home Guard, and not WW1 either. These photos depict Territorial (TA) soldiers of the Royal Artillery sometime in the early 1930's. Does this help or hinder your quest? Dave.
Guest jantyannie Posted 16 August , 2004 Share Posted 16 August , 2004 Thank you for the quick response. All information helps. In 1930 Matthew would have been about 20 years old and Patrick would have been about 54 years old so I think it settles it as Matthew. It would also have been well before my Mum or her sister and brothers were born so that would possibly explain them not knowing about it. Thanks again
