Soldiers Records

Have just seen the news that the indexes for wartime deaths abroad are available online, for soldiers in both world wars and the Boer war. Also births and marraiges that took place in the lines.

The indexes can be found at http://www.1837online.com

Once the reference information has been found certificates can be ordered online from the General Register Office:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content

The 1837 site is a pay per view, although browsing the index is free. Cost of certificates ordered online and available within 4 working days is £7.00

Hope this helps, the GRO certificate service has just been rolled out for people abroad.

hello jock

a 1914_1921 death certificate tells you,

regiment, regimental or army number, rank, full name, age, country of birth, date of death, place of death ie france or belgium etc, cause of death ie killed in action not the precise cause.

thats what was on a death cert of a soldier i purchased recently,he was killed in action on the 1-7-1916.

there was no next of kin on the certificate.

Andy gives the right info for an overseas certificate but that for someone who died in the UK will give you all the usual info plus nok and exact cause of death.

Im not too sure why anyone would want to use the service?? It doesnt tell you anything more than the CWGC and you have to pay. Why bother???
