I have just today received this book from Amazon and it looks to be very good but obviously I have not read it yet.

I have searched this forum but cannot find a thread on it.

Has anybody any views on this book?

Regards

Received this book for Christmas and have read about 100 pages, seems to be very well written, concentrates on the three German right flank armies and the 5th French army (so far), the other frontier battles are only mentioned in passing. The first chapter explains the author's understanding of the Schlieffen Plan and in an end note states - "In 1999 Terence Zuber claimed that the Schlieffen Plan was not intended for use if war broke out but was aimed at getting the Minister for War to sanction a large increase in the size of the Army. Although this thesis has been discredited, it led to a valuable critical debate on the subject." Senior's references for the chapter include Gerhard Ritter, Annika Mombauer, Terence Holmes and Terence Zuber, no new primary sources as far as I can tell.

Not sure if "Schlieffen" still visits this forum but if so would be interested in what he has to say.

Dave, from the tenor of the debate on Amazon I would say that 'Schlieffen' wrote the one star review that is posted there ;)

Robert,

I see what you mean, I guess that pretty much answers my question, for anyone else that wants to see the "The most helpful critical review" here it is - http://www.amazon.com/Home-Before-Leaves-General-Military/product-reviews/1849088438http://www.amazon.com/Home-Before-Leaves-General-Military/product-reviews/1849088438http://www.amazon.com/Home-Before-Leaves-General-Military/product-reviews/1849088438

based on that review, I'll read Herwig's The Marne 1914 again instead

Just arrived cheap from Amazon and noted dust jacket cover of the famous photograph of German troops on manovures ,so what does it describe it as? German infantry on the offensive First World War, oh dear not a good start, but in that photograph and this image shows the top with hills to the rear something i never noted previous a group of civilians and standing out a lady in a long white dress with a large dog as clear as day.
