“L’odore del Novecento” is an intimate look at the events as they unfold through the Twentieth Century and at the lives of persons who experienced the horrors of the war on the home front and battlefields. It reads more like a novel than a history, but it is not fiction. Luciano Trincia, an Italian historian with a Ph.D. awarded in Germany, has used an unusual method of writing a history of the “Age of Extremes” - he uses the personal histories of individuals, using their memoirs, diaries and letters. Trincia intertwines these stories, thus covering not only WWI, The Spanish Civil War and WWII, but foreshadowing the post-war reconstruction period. The use of diaries and letters to frame the horrors of war has been done before, but not this well. This book includes photos of each of the "contributors" and that certainly makes it come even more alive, this is a story with many faces. You really get the feeling that you know these people as persons and not as historical markers. The writing is so powerful that you can almost smell the gun powder and feel the snow piling over the tops of your boots. The book doesn't do anything to cover the "big events" of the period. But this gives the book a realism that adds to the whole. This book captures the feelings of ordinary people being pulled along by events far beyond their control, and every one of them is changed by it. The book is lavishly illustrated with portraits of the participants and scenes shot on battlefields and ruined cities and towns. Reading it is a deeply emotional experience. This is a fascinating read and one that captures the very personal accounts of the individuals as they are participating in twentieth century Europe. The book gets beyond dry statistics and battlefield logistics to reveal the lives of those whose lives were transformed by the conflicts of “The Short Twentieth Century”. This book may help us be more aware of this period of history.
