sotonmate Posted 4 November , 2012 Share Posted 4 November , 2012 Harry Thank you for this item ! I am wondering what proportion of the total mines laid/swept this figure of 56,571 was ! Then I could perhaps rationalise a fact that I discovered a few years back, and which I need to try and find again(!), of the large number of ships which continued to strike mines up to 1925 whilst about their commercial business. mhifle Posted 5 November , 2012 Share Posted 5 November , 2012 Hi, This American First World War mine was been found near the route of the Langeled gas pipeline in the Troll/Sleipner area of the North Sea17 Aug 2006. The mine was discovered by the Normand Tonjer survey ship which filmed the seabed around Langeled with a video-equipped ROV Regards Mark
TeeCeeCee Posted 5 November , 2012 Share Posted 5 November , 2012 It was a colossal feat: they'd form a group of layers in Scotland, load a ship full of mines and set sail. Once there they'd form up in a line acoss the line of advance and sail on a compass bearing towards Norway dopping as they went leaving a instant strip as deep as the no of ships. The barrage snaked it's way from scotland to norway.
