Guest RichardM Posted 8 April , 2003 Share Posted 8 April , 2003 I see from the page on the 74th (Yeomanry) Division that the 209th and 210th Brigade Machine Gun Companies joined the division about 3 months after the 4th Company. Would anybody be able to tell me if these were new companies fresh out from the UK and if not, where had they come from and what was the reason for the delay? Joe Sweeney Posted 8 April , 2003 Share Posted 8 April , 2003 Richard, The 4th MGC was formed in 1916 as the 2nd Dismounted Bde MG Coy and redesignated on 14.1.17 as 4th MGC Coy. The 2nd Dismounted Bde became the 229th Infantry Bde. The 209th MGC was formed in 1916 as the 3rd Dismounted Bde MG Coy and redesignated on 14.1.17 as 209th MGC Coy The 3rd Dismounted Bde became the 230th Infantry Bde. The 210th MGC was formed in 1916 as the 4th Dismounted Bde MG Coy and redesignated on 14.1.17. as 210th MGC Coy. The 4th Dismounted Bde became the 231st Infantry Bde. None were new companies and all were formed in theatre. They arrived with in the 74th Division when their respective brigades arrived. 229th Bde 8-17/3/17; 230 Bde 9-13/4/17; 231 Bde 1-6/4/17. Staffsyeoman Posted 8 April , 2003 Share Posted 8 April , 2003 Can only endorse all that Joe says; the Coys served in Egypt then F&F. Perhaps unsurprisingly, these 3 Coys formed 74 Bn MGC on 11 Apr 18 in 74 (Y) Div. However, we've got a formation date for 210 Coy of 21 Jan 17. Only a week's difference.. Guest RichardM Posted 9 April , 2003 Share Posted 9 April , 2003 Ok, thanks for that information. I think my confusion is over the meaning of the word "joined" as it appears on http://www.1914-1918.net/74div.htm It seems that in the case of the 229th Brigade and part of the 230th, we have the date the units were assigned on paper to the 74th Division (i.e. January 1917) while for some other units we have the dates that they physically arrived with the Division. Would that be (roughly) correct?
