Help with Service Records - KOYLI

Having had some excellent help from this site over the past few days, I have established that a Great Uncle (Michael Layden 9th Batt KOYLI) was wounded on the 4th October 1917 at Broodseinde. After deployments in England he returned to France on the 4th August 1918. His deployments then become a little confusing and I am seeking help to interpret the following - what do they mean - what was he doing? (taken from different sheets in his records):

04.08.18 2nd Posted Cpl “France”

05.08.18 F. IB Depot Posted to 2nd Battalion KOYLI

13.08.18 F. IB Depot ?

14.08.18 3rd Echelon Base Depot ?

Compulsorily Transferred

17.08.18 180 Posted ?? Cpl

28.08.18 O i/c Labour Corps Section 3rd Echelon

31.08.18 OC 180 Coy Joined

10.09.18 Lab ? 10th Army ? Etaples

11.09.18 3 IBD Joined Etaples

14.09.18 Posted to 251 POW Coy

15.09.18 Promoted Sgt

10.12.18 251 Appointed Paid a/CQMS

Would "180" be the 180th Tunnelling Company, RE .... Would this be part of the Labour Corps 10th Army. I assume the 251 POW Coy would be looking after POW's - would this and all of these deployments be at Etaples. Would all of these postings be under the 2nd Battalion KOYLI.

Why so many postings in such a short space of time?

Any help would be appreciated..... David Sharpe

David,

I don't have access to his MIC or the service record, but here are a few observations from your notes. I assume that he is the Michael Layden 42995 KOYLI and 625585 Labour Corps.

IBD = Infantry Base Depot.

17.08.18 Compulsorily Transferred to the Labour Corps. His LC number certainly fits with a batch mainly issued to men sent to PoW Companies. (From "No Labour, No Battle")

I assume that his first posting was to 180th Company, Labour Corps.

O i/c = Officer in Charge (often followed by "Records")

OC = Officer Commanding

251 PoW Company = another Labour Corps company

Phil
