Paul Reed Posted 26 August , 2004 Share Posted 26 August , 2004 It was ninety years ago my great uncle, Pte Dan Boyles, fought his first battle of the Great War at Esnes. Below is Dan in 1918; by this time he had been wounded three times and gassed, and served at Gallipoli. You can just make out his 1914 Star ribbon. Paul Reed Posted 26 August , 2004 Author Share Posted 26 August , 2004 Below is Esnes Communal Cemetery, where many of Dan's comrades who fell on 26th August 1914 are buried. Among them is his Company Commander, Capt Vandeleur.
Paul Reed Posted 26 August , 2004 Author Share Posted 26 August , 2004 The French erected a small memorial to the battle in this cemetery.
GrandsonMichael Posted 26 August , 2004 Share Posted 26 August , 2004 Evening Paul, Glad to remember the soldiers of the 2nd Bn Essex Regiment. Among them your great uncle and my grandfather Charles Frederick Gambles, who luckily also survived. This is him a day after he got married in 1915. There is a lot I don't know yet, but I'm learning..... Cheers, Michael
