Terry Posted 26 August , 2004 Share Posted 26 August , 2004 On this date in 1914 the 2nd Bn.,Suffolk Regiment, acting as a rear guard for the 5th Division, was overwhelmed by the enemy, suffering over 700 casualties. Their battle is recorded as a chapter in Gould's "Epic Actions of the First World War". One private soldier who fought that day, and was taken prisoner, was 6488 Pte.Nelson Bird. He had landed on the continent eleven days earlier. Attached is a photo of Bird's medal group, along with a unit cap badge I have added (not even sure if it is the proper badge for the period). Paul Reed Posted 26 August , 2004 Share Posted 26 August , 2004 Nice group... also remembering Pte H.Smy of the 2nd Suffolks who was also taken prisoner in this action. I bought his 1914 Star trio 15+ years ago, but sadly don't have it to hand today to photograph. As I had a meeting on the Somme today, I couldn't get over to Le Cateau, but hopefully someone has laid a wreath at the Suffolks monument which is out in the fields on the spot where the last stand took place.
