help identifying a postcard

In amongst a group of WW1 postcards I recently purchased, I found one which appears to be earlier. It shows an officer wearing a uniform that has a standing collar with red gorget patches, and rank badges on the shoulder strapes. He also wears a peaked cap with a red band, and a sam brown complete with sword. He is identified as J Reeves Smith. The card looks mass produced, in that it is not a real photograph. I first thought that he was a General Officer from the Boer War, but my searches on the internet have drawn a blank. Can anyone tell me who J Reeves Smith was?

Thanks

Gavin

As I have received no replies to my post, my idea that this was a mass produced postcard showing a well known personality is obviously flawed! To try another approach, I'd be grateful if anyone with an Army List for the period 1900 - 1914, would have a look to see if there is any officer with the surname 'Reeves Smith' or 'Reeves-Smith'.

Many Thanks

Gavin

Just a thought, and I could be miles off here, but as it's a massed produced photo and no trace can be found of the subject is it possible J reeves-Smith were a photography company specialising in soldiers?

I think this is more likely the case. Some photographers had their details printed on the front of cards, other embossed. It might be replicated on the flipside - is that the case here?

Ah..... Now there's a thought. One, I admit, I hadn't considered.

On the back, the card only has the words - "Dainty Novels" Series - printed in the top left corner. This also made me think it was a mass produced card (ie, one of a series). The photographers names I have seen printed/embossed on other postcards are not usually as prominently displayed as this.

Thanks very much for the suggestion, but I'm still not sure.....

Regards

Gavin
