Captain A L Gore

While reading 'With the Cameliers in Palestine', I came an interesting account. The 16th New Zealand Company were involved in attacks on the Hedjaz railway. On one occasion, an Arab horseman approached them. He had a pair of 'Zeiss prismatic field-glasses, and on one side of the barrel was engraved the name "Capt A L Gore, 1/8 Hamps Reg"'. Apparently Gore landed at Suvla Bay. '[He] went to hurry up stretcher-bearers to get all the wounded away before the retirement [3 days after the landing] was carried out, and was never seen or heard of again.'

Does anyone know what officially happened to Captain Gore?

Thanks

Robert

According to To What End Did They Die Captain Arthur Holmes, 1/8 Bn, Hampshire Regiment has no known grave, so I guess they never found him. Dick Flory

I am most interested in all things to do with the Isle of Wight Rifles (1/8 Hants).

This story is similar to the finding of the pocket watch, belonging to Frank Beck, of the 5th Norfolks, and was obviously looted by the Turks after the action on the 12th August 1915.

The 8th Hants and 5th Norfolks were in the same brigade (163rd), and their actions (as many know) were made into the made-for-TV drama, 'All The King's Men.'

Gore married into another well known IoW family, called Holmes.

What happened to the binoculars....??

Mate,

Acording to the book, He that is the author questioned an Arab from the village of Sahab who had them around his neck.

He (The Arab) said he had taken them from a Turk officer prisoner but the NZ soldier could not get the arab to hand them over so they may still be with him.

Purhaps he should have asked an aussie to help.
