SteveE Posted 31 August , 2004 Share Posted 31 August , 2004 A special rededication service was held today at St. Neots cemetery to honour the memory of a Scottish teenager who died on this day 90 years ago saving the life of a local girl. On August 31, 1914, Walter Taylor, a seventeen year old in the 3rd City of Aberdeen Battery, saved the life of 16 year old Maude Andrew from drowning in the River Ouse at Eynesbury. Although he managed to save the girl he was sadly unable to save himself. On January 29th 1915 the residents of Eynesbury had, along with Walter's comrades, raised enough money to erect a memorial of Aberdeen granite in St Neots Cemetery, where the soldier had been buried after his heroic, but tragic, death. Over the years the granite memorial had begun to sink and was in need of some restoration which has, thankfully, been carried out by two Town Council workers who volunteered to do the work during their lunch breaks. So, remembering Walter Taylor today, a lad who performed an act of outstanding heroism and who paid the ultimate price without ever leaving these shores.
