Hello to all,

This is my first look into my Grandfather (William George NEWING) and I have regretfully very little information to go on, and no living relatives to ask.

I have had a look on the Medals roll and that has produced 2 "Newing's" but regretfully neither of them is my "Bill".

William George was born in Beaumont Road Leyton (which was then in Essex) in 1896.

I can remember Bill telling me as a very young child (probably at the end of the 1950's early 1960's) that he served in India, and was fighting "Johnny Turk"

I know very little else about him regretfully, only that he appears to have a step-brother who appears on the 1901 census as "Patmore Newing" I think "Patmore may have been his original Surname but cannot find any more about him.

Bill married my grandmother (Violet SMITH) in Oct 1921 and passed away in 1978.

Can any kind person give me some guidance into a possible regiment etc.

Thank You.

The on-line MICs are not complete so it is not surprising that you can't find him. Perhaps a search of the MIC index at the PRO, Kew is called for plus a search of the service records in WO 363/364 & PIN 26.
