Guest Rechlin Posted 4 September , 2004 Share Posted 4 September , 2004 I am researching the life and death of 2nd Lieutenant Janes, who was killed whilst flying at Turnberry, Ayr, Scotland, 11th April 1918. Before the formation of the R.A.F, he served in Egypt 1914-16-17, and Gallipoli 1915. He does not appear in the Army or Navy Officers Lists, therefore I assume he was either R.N.A.S or R.F.C. I have looked at Gallipoli files at the P.R.O. but can find nothing, any suggestions where to research ? He has a distinctive mosaic grave in Abney Park Cemetery, London, N.16 which I maintain, and I am determined to find out about him, any leads would be welcome. Dolphin Posted 4 September , 2004 Share Posted 4 September , 2004 Rechlin First of all, welcome to the Forum. 2Lt C W Janes isn't shown in 'Airmen Died in the Great War' (the standard reference work on the members of the RFC, RNAS, RAF, AFC and WRAF who died in the War) but 2Lt Charles William JONES from No 2 (Auxiliary) School of Aerial Gunnery at Turnberry is listed. He was a native of Stoke Newington and was killed in an accident while flying Sopwith Camel B9210 on 11 April 1918. The aeroplane went out of control at 200ft after firing at a raft target and then crashed into the sea, hitting submerged rocks near Turnberry lighthouse. 2Lt C W Jones is shown as being buried in Abney Cemetery. I think that this must be your man. I hope this helps. Gareth
