Guest scott leader Posted 4 September , 2004 Share Posted 4 September , 2004 Guys I'm sure someone can help me with the probable date for the Military Medal, to 1115 Cpl F Smart 1/Royal Warwickshire Reg. London Gazette 11 November 1916. Any ideas on the battalion around Sep - Oct 1916, or more specific the action what it was for?? Thanks Scott

taryong Posted 9 October , 2004 Share Posted 9 October , 2004 Hi, I am certain that the best way for you is to read the War Diary at the Regimental Museum in Warwick or the National Archive in Kew. I would like to recommend the first one! Regards, Kang
SPotter Posted 9 October , 2004 Share Posted 9 October , 2004 Scott, I found your post very interesting - my interest lies in the 1st Bn Dorsetshire Regt. The first confirmed awards of MMs to this Bn for the Somme are also in the 11/11/16 Gazette, whereas the 6th Bn first gets recognition in the 23/08/16 Gazette, which might be a bit early for actions on 01/07/16, but again on 01/09/16, and 9 men in the Gazette of 11/10/16 - a whole month earlier than the 1st Bn. Given the 'accepted' 3 month delay between the act and the gazette announcement, this would suggest actions during August., but it does seem probable that such a (relatively) big number number of awards would relate to the opening day? Guest scott leader Posted 9 October , 2004 Share Posted 9 October , 2004 Steve Thanks 4 the info. Yes it's very hard to establish a probable date for the Military Medal on the Somme. The fact that it was not recorded to the same level as the DCM or MC makes it worse! So i's posible that many MM's do relate to July/August but can't be confirmed?? What do you think?
