michaeldr Posted 5 September , 2004 Share Posted 5 September , 2004 (edited) Remembered on the GWF today Sapper 763 William James of the 1st/1st (Welsh) Field Coy. Royal Engineers Who died aged 35 on 5th September 1915 the son of Evan and Pheobe James of ‘The Three Bells’, St. Clears, Carmarthenshire Grave:11. A. 2 in Green Hill Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey Green Hill and Chocolate Hill (which form together Yilghin Burnu) are adjoining hills, about 52 metres above sea level, which rise almost from the eastern shore of the Salt Lake. The cemetery lies on the east side of the Anzac-Suvla Road and can be seen from Suvla and from Anzac. Green Hill Cemetery was made after the Armistice when isolated graves were brought in from the battlefields of August 1915 and from small burial grounds in the surrounding area; York, 40th Brigade, Nos. 1 and 2, Green Hill Nos. 1 and 2, Chocolate Hill, Inniskillen, Salt Lake and Scimitar Hill [the latter containing 520 graves, almost all unidentified.] There are now 2,971 servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery. 2,472 of the burials are unidentified but special memorials commemorate a number of casualties known or believed to be buried among them. Details from the CWGC and Holt’s Battlefield Guide Also attached is a photograph of Green Hill Cemetery which is taken from Major and Mrs Holt’s Battlefield Guide Book. Their photograph agrees with that published by the CWGC in their Information Sheet ‘The Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey’ [ref ISA3 05/99] However I wonder if anyone thinks like me, that perhaps the CWGC have shown the picture of the wrong cemetery on their web site page for Green Hill. Is the picture which they currently show not in fact Azmak Cemetery? http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/cemetery_...=2000105&mode=1 Edited 5 September , 2004 by michaeldr
