The following is taken from the National Roll of the Great War, Volume XII - Bedford & Northampton:

NIGHTINGALE, T.W., Pte., 1/4th Northants. Regiment

He joined in June 1916 and in March of the following year was sent to Egypt and thence into Palestine, where he served as a signaller. He made the supreme sacrifice, falling in action in the second Battle of Gaza in April 1917, only a month after landing in the East. He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.

"His life for his Country, his soul to God."

13 Symington Street, St James, northampton.

Hope the above helps.

Kind rgds

Ed

Doug, Northern Soul, and Ed,

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply to this.

Ed, in particular, thank you for the national roll entry. Invaluable.

It's a pleasure Stephen ;)

Have you tried the local newspaper for any mention of his death? If you're lucky, there might even be a full obituary for him.

Kind rgds

Theres also a book called 'Tale of a territorial' somewhere, that (Im told) has letters etc relating to the 1/4th Northants. Whether it relates to their adventures in Gallipoli or Sinai/Palestine, Im afraid I couldnt say, but may be worth checking out? Havent succesfully found anyone with a copy yet myself!

He is on the Northampton War memorial and the preparatory roll for the memorialk confirms his address as 13 Symington Street and this information also indicates that he was a signaller.
