eamann Posted 9 April , 2013 Share Posted 9 April , 2013 Hello! My maternal grandfather, Michael (Mike) Magee, joined the Army in Belfast on 28 April 1915 and served in the RASC in the mechanical transport division. His regiment No. was M2/081316. His father George, despite being 55 years old and having lost his left arm in Burma in 1887, re-enlisted also in Belfast on 5 June 1915. I do not know which regiment he chose. At the end of WWI he was in the Labour Corps and his reg. no. was 329692. I was wondering if there are many other examples of sons and their fathers having served together? It would be interesting to make a collection of them. Below is a photo of them both taken in March 1918 when Mike took advantage of a furlough to go back to Belfast and get married. Old Owl Posted 9 April , 2013 Share Posted 9 April , 2013 Hi Eamann, This is probably a lot more common than you may think and although I have no idea of numbers it may well have been discussed/assessed previously. One poignant example which I came across years ago is that of father and son serving in the same battalion and killed on the same day, these are: Lt.Col.Harry Moorhouse, DSO, 1/4th Bn K.O.Y.L.I. and his son Captain Ronald Wilkinson Moorhouse, MC, 1/4th K.O.Y.L.I. I am certain that there are many more examples. Robert

auchonvillerssomme Posted 9 April , 2013 Share Posted 9 April , 2013 Scritch unimaginable the parents losing their son and grandsons after seeing them move so far away, do you have any idea when Sidney and Sophia went to BC? My list above of the Australian and Canadian father and son's is not by any means complete, I would be interested in seeing others added.

My list above of the Australian and Canadian father and son's is not by any means complete, I would be interested in seeing others added. As you say, very difficult to imagine what Sophia must have gone through, losing a husband and two sons. I have an account from the Ashbourne News of a visit made to Hartington by Sidney and his son William whilst in training in England, stating that it was the first time William had been to the village in his life. When I get back from work tonight, I will transcribe it and post it on here. Richard

Oliver, of Trail, British Columbia. Native of Greenwood. Bois-Carre British Cemetery, Thelus, V, B, 14 From The Ashbourne News, Friday, June 18th, 1915 HARTINGTON Roll of Honour – We deeply regret to record the deaths of Lce.-Corporal Sidney Oliver and his son, Private William E. Oliver, both being killed in action on April 23rd in France. They both belonged to the 7th Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 1st Canadian Contingent, and previous to being sent out to France they were stationed on Salisbury Plain, during which time they paid two visits to Hartington, and pleased indeed were all to welcome back, after twenty-eight years' sojourn in Canada, such a favourite as Sidney Oliver. Always bright, and of a genial disposition, he had a wide circle of friends, many of whom spent a few happy hours in his company only a few weeks ago, little thinking it would be the last time they would see him, although fully realising the terrible risks to which he might shortly be exposed. His son, Private Oliver, was born in Canada, and this was his first visit to his father's native village. Much sympathy is felt in Hartington and the surrounding district for Mr. James Oliver and his family in the great loss they have sustained. A memorial service was held in the church on Monday evening, the 31st ult., when the vicar (the Rev. H. P. Hale) delivered an impressive sermon to a large and sympathetic congregation. eairicbloodaxe Posted 9 April , 2013 Share Posted 9 April , 2013 If there was ever a thread reflecting the true poignancy of the futility and waste that is war, then this is it. Every soldier is someones' son, many are someone's husband. These men were both. Unbelievably sad stories. Regards Ian
Anneca Posted 9 April , 2013 Share Posted 9 April , 2013 I totally agree with you Ian. Some of the posts here makes me realize the terrible sadness the families of these sons and husbands must have had. We just cannot imagine their grief. Tim Hailwood Posted 17 April , 2013 Share Posted 17 April , 2013 An interesting and sad thread. I have been researching my grandfathers service for some time but only recently, quite by chance, discovered that his father also served. Herbert Pulford Private 12036 11th Battalion kings Liverpool Regiment enlisted August 1914 at the age of 19 and served in Belgium and France. He was transferred to the 1st Battalion Kings Liverpool in 1918 and wounded twice. He came home, married my grandmother and lived a happy life before dying in his 80's. Herbet Pulford Corporal 291970, 116528 5th Labour Battalion Re and then 112th Company Chinese Labour Company enlisted August 1915 at the age of 44. He also survived and lived until 1955. My grandfather never mentioned his father, for reasons I am uncovering, so the fact that he served is a big surprise. Tim
