Barrett

Am interested in finding the papers of the following:

W. C. Barrett--commander 16th Indian Division 1916 and 9th Indian Division 1918.

Any info that will help is appreciated.

BTW it is possible the WC is for Walter Charles, but I wouldn't bet the farm on that.

Is it WC Barrett or Barratt?

If its Barratt you will find info on him in SERVICES OF MILITARY OFFICERS 1920.

Rich, some biographical information if it will help:

Major- General William Cross Barratt. Born 2 June 1862, 3rd son of James Barratt of Hanslope , Bucks. Married in 1907 , Katherine Matilda Goldsmith, OBE. Educated Bedford Grammar School. Entered Army 1883(Royal Berkshire Regt) from 4th Norfolk Regiment. Served Sudan Expedition, 1885, Actions at Hasheen and Tofrek (medal, two clasps and Star.) Zhob Valley Expedition1890; Waziristan 1894-95 (medal and clasp) East Africa, 1896. Commandant, Indian Contingent, operations against Mazuri Arab rebels,; Despatches, DSO . Nominated for 2nd Class Brilliant Star. Zanzibar (despatches) ; Uganda 1897-98 - Brevet of Major; China, 1901, Relief of Peking (despatches , medal, two clasps). CB 1911. N.W. Frontier, India: Darwesh Khal Wazirs Expedition. Promoted Maj-Gen and awarded CSI for valuable services during the war, commanding 16th and 9th Divisions. Retired 1920.

Address in 1925, The Hollies, Midsomer Norton, Somerset.
