Hi,

The 7th Staffs were in Gallipoli from 7/8/15, Imbros from 18/12/15, Egypt from 2/2/16, then onto France & Flanders from 7/7/16.

"Where" they were during these times........ haven't a clue. Sorry.

Les.

Paul

The 7th Btn South Staffords spent Feb-June of 1916 working on the neglected defences of the Suez Canal before moving to France in July 1916.

The 1/6th and 1/5th Btns embarked in H.M.S. Magnificient on 2nd January 1916,they arrived at Alexandria January 8th but did not disembark until the 9th. The Btn’s entrained 11pm that night reaching their destination Shalufa, the following afternoon. The 1/6th crossed the canal to make contact with the Indian regiment due for relief. The take over consisted of handing over a machine gun and a coil of rusty barbed wire. On the 26th the 1/6th Btn along with a troop of Indian Cavalry, a field ambulance,a company of R.E. and a half a Btn of North Staffords was ordered into the desert 6½ miles E.N.E of Shalufa to construct No3 Post, on the 30th theyand the 1/5th Btn entrained at Shalufa and began the return journey to France on the 5th Feb 1916 aboard S.S. Transylvania.

Hi Paul,

According to Ray Westlake's " British Regiments at Gallipoli", the 7th South Staffs landed on Gallipoli on 20th July at Cape Helles, were withdrawn from there on 28th July and were redeployed to Suvla on the 7th of August. They remained at the Suvla front until withdrawn on the 18th of December. There is a small amount of information in the book on their actions from August-December.

Regards,

Liam.
