This Brigade supplied guns to the 38th Brigade RGA on its formation. Does anybody have a bit of background on the 1/4th and what became of them.

A potted history of the brigade's war service will no doubt be at this website.

The 4th Home Counties (H) Bde, RFA was formed 27 October 1908 as a new unit in the Territorial Force with 4 and 5 Kent (H) Btys and 4 HC Amm Column. After the war the brigade was reconstituted as (part of) 52nd (Kent) Medium Brigade, RA. In 1935 this brigade converted to AA as 58th (Kent) AA Bde. After WWII it became 458th (Kent) HAA Regt, and amalgamated over the years with other regiments in the London area. I think you will find some info on www.regiments.org. I hope this is of use to you.

Regards,

Wienand

At the beginning of the war 1/4 Home Counties Bde, RFA was part of the 44th (Home Counties) Divisional Artillery but it did not go to India with the division. On 21 Dec 14 the brigade went to France, redesignated as the 27th Divisional Ammunition Column. It returned to the UK in 1915 and went to France for a second time on 10 Mar 1916 as 381 (How) Brigade, RFA armed with 4.5" Howitzers. The brigade joined the 63rd (Royal Navy) Divisional Artillery on 9 June 16 and was redesignated on 19 July 16 as 223 Brigade, RFA. Regards. Dick Flory
