My headmaster's grandfather served with this unit. From Chris's excelllent BEF Orbat I know that it was part of 40th RGA Brigade and attached to 1st Army. On the off chance that anyone has any further details I'd be very interested

According to the Order of Battle 11 November 1918, 196 Battery RGA was 196 Siege Battery, 40th Howitzer Brigade RGA with 4-6 inch Howitzers.

You mention that your headmaster's grandfather served with 196 Battery RGA. There was both a 196th Siege Battery, RGA and a 196th Heavy Battery, RGA. Do you know with which he served?
