neilston Posted 1 November , 2013 Share Posted 1 November , 2013 Hi people I am a small part of the research team for the Neilston war memorial project in East Renfrewshire Scotland, We are looking to research the Soldiers from our village for a new proposed war memorial to be erected next year in time for the anniversary. We have a team of 4 looking for soldiers who -Worked-lived where born -or enlisted in the Village of Neilston. We have been on this for over 14 months and have confirmed over 157 lads for ww1 alone. We started with a list from our local church which had 97 names, Unfortunately the minister who compiled the list of the 97 has died and we cant find out why she had listed these fellows below on her list of Neilston soldiers. We are looking for a connection to our village and not the parish of Neilston as this brings in other villages that have their own memorials. Can any one help find if these lads below are connected to the village of Neilston East Renfrewshire? Malcolm Posted 2 November , 2013 Share Posted 2 November , 2013 Hi , The first named man was born in Neilston so he is a must. The other three appear to be the result of using Geoff's Search Engine with only ' NEILSTON' being included. If this is done then you get all the Neilston names plus anyone with next of kin in Neilston or at an address with Neilston in it ( which seems the case here) and anyone with Neilston in their name. ie. John Neilston Smith for instance Not very scientific. I would have a look at the above last names names on CWGC, www.cwgc.org Scottish National War Memorial www.snwm.org The Scottish War Memorial Project http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/ the latter especially Tollcross Glasgow and Paisley. They are not listed in Neilston Parish Church but may have been of another religion. St Thomas' RC? Get back to me if needing more help. Aye Malcolm Hi Malcolm We cant find any details of a birth for Arch Sinclair in Neilston, One of our team thought that the Paisley lads was because of the "Lived Neilston road" connection but if you run through causalities for Neilston Road Paisley there are Hundreds of lads, So why would the Rev only have these 3 lads on her list and not others? The Murdoch lad is Glasgow with a house named after the village? All the names are village family names Muir, Murdoch ,Maxwell and Sinclair but we cant trace the connection to relate these lads to the Village, I suspect they must have worked owned businesses or where members of the church here. Many Thanks Matt

neilston Posted 3 November , 2013 Author Share Posted 3 November , 2013 Hi People above is our list of confirmed Soldiers for the proposed civic war memorial to be constructed in the Village of Neilston East Renfrewshire next year, We are working away trying to secure funding and fundraising in order that we have sufficient funds to erect a memorial that will speak eloquently for these brave lads and about 50 young men for our village for ww2. Neilston is only a small village the long list of ww1 casualties must have been horrifying to endure over such a short period of time. Regards Matt Perhaps you have already checked but the Mapping Our Anzacs website shows 3 enlistments of Neilston-born in the Australian forces. Fortunately all 3 survived. Names were Robert Fenton (did not serve overseas), 1750 Robert Hamilton, & 2014 William Hay. Cheers, Greg Cheers Grieg I will cross check and see that we have them on our list of Neilson Soldiers. Thanks Matt

Swally Posted 15 February , 2015 Share Posted 15 February , 2015 Hi, Maybe you have this, if you have do you have a picture? Private Stirling was born in Neilston and resided at 57, Anderson Street, Cambusnethan, he had enlisted at Wishaw and was single. Friends of Private Robert Stirling, 2nd Gordon Highlanders, whose home was in Anderson Street, Cambusnethan, were officially notified on Tuesday that he had been killed in action on 1st of July 1917 (the first day of the Battle of the Somme) during the attack on Mametz. The battalion assaulted the western side of the village on the right of the railway and reached the German First Line, they then came under heavy machine gun fire from the Shrine but moved on past Mametz Station (The Halt), Shrine Valley, Cemetery Trench and to objectives Bunny Alley and Orchard Valley. The Battalion was withdrawn to Citadel Camp on 3rd of July having received 461 casualties. Robert had joined the Army about two years prior and had been at the front for four months. Prior to enlisting he was employed as an iron moulder in Coltness Iron Works. Private Stirling, who was 23 years of age, was a son of the late Mr William Stirling, cutter with the Newmains Co-operative Society.Private Stirling is interred in Dantzig Alley, British Cemetery, Mametz - Grave Reference IV.G.5 Aye, Swally
TDrake Posted 27 September , 2015 Share Posted 27 September , 2015 Hi, I came across this when researching my husband's family and have some information for William Alexander Martin that may be of interest to you. William Alexander Martin, my husbands great grandfather, was born on 12th July 1876 in Neilston, Scotland the son of Daniel Martin and his wife Jessie (nee Anderson). On the 28th October 1898 at Glasgow, William married Elizabeth Allardice and they went on to have two children that we know about, William Allardice Martin (b.1900) and Jessie Martin (b.1902). William migrated to Canada in 1902 with Elizabeth and the children following in 1903. William Alexander Martin survived WW1 and died on the 9th September 1946 at Chilliwack, B.C., Canada (his death certificate can be found at https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FLL4-VHL). The Chilliwack Progress of 18th September 1946 stated that 'He served overseas in the 61st Battery, Canadian Artillery in World War I and is a member of the Canadian Legion.' This can be found at http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/43342870/. My husbands grandfather William Allardice Martin, we were told was a prisoner of war in the First World War and ended up working in Malaya and Singapore as a Prison Officer after the war. He seems to have been estranged from his parents and we are not sure how he got from Canada in 1916 to Malaya after the war and would love to find out if he did enlisted in WW1 and was a prisoner of the Germans as we have been told. We do know that he was a Prison Officer at Changi when Singapore fell and spent the rest of the war as a civilian POW, although he did manage to get his estranged wife Violet and son Ronnie out of Singapore to England. He was repatriated to England in 1945 on board the 'M.V. Tegelberg' and joined his family in Barrow in Furness, where they had lived during the war, with his son passing on that his father looked like a walking skeleton except for hugely swollen legs when he saw him again. William Allardice Martin did not stay there long as he returned to Singapore on board the 'Mauretania' in June 1946 and died in Singapore on 23rd August 1949 having never recovered from his time as a prisoner. regards Tracy
Glen Posted 27 September , 2015 Share Posted 27 September , 2015 TracyWelcome to the forum.Your Husband's Great Grandfathers Attestation Form is on line at http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/first-world-war-1914-1918-cef/Pages/search.aspxHis service number was 331840.I could only find 1 William, with a birthdate in 1900 and that does not appear to William Allardice, but maybe he lied about his DOB?All Canadian service records are currently being digitised and will be added to that site as they are done, so you can keep checking back - those done have an additional column to the right of the two page attestation form.I can not find a likely candidate for him in the WW1 POW records under that name
TDrake Posted 2 October , 2015 Share Posted 2 October , 2015 Hi, Thank you so much for your reply and for looking up the records for me. I had found the Attestation form some time ago which gave me some good leads but left me with many more questions than answers as usual. I will keep checking for the digitised service records, the ones here in Australia are a wonderful resource for researchers. It is possible that he lied about his DOB and perhaps his name to enlist, especially if he was doing so against family wishes. We think that if he did enlist it may have been in the UK as he maintained connections with family there but seems to have had no contact with his family in Canada, stating that his parents were deceased in newspaper announcements of his engagement in Singapore in 1927. Family stories are not always reliable and it is possible that he may have reinvented himself and his past when he moved to the Far East. I will keep looking and see what I can turn up, thankfully more records are being digitised worldwide every day to aid this endeavour. regards Tracy

TDrake Posted 9 October , 2015 Share Posted 9 October , 2015 Hi Matt, Thanks for that information, it is greatly appreciated and I will definitely be chasing up any leads on the family connections with your village. We know very little of his Martin connections as I am just starting to scratch the surface of his paternal line and the remaining living family that we know has very little knowledge of them as well. I am hoping that we can unravel it all and pass on the family history to our grandchildren, so that even though the surname is not continued with us (as my husband uses his stepfathers surname) their ancestry will be known to them. My husband is ex military and I commend you for this wonderful project and wish you every success with it. Regards Tracy

Guest Jennifer munley Posted 10 July , 2016 Share Posted 10 July , 2016 Good day Old Sweats; I happened upon your website and blog while conducting genealogical research. I noticed that the three lads Munley have asterisks next to their first names. Would you tell why that is? I had visited Neilston a few years  back. I also visited the  registry in Edinburgh castle. The lads appear to be accurately listed as deceased in records. The family does not have deep ties to Neilston as they originate from Ireland. at least that is what I have discovered from researching the Munley surname. the women folk have been harder to track. I have to work on the Bennett surname. Information that you could share would be appreciated. Warm regards, Jennifer Munley
